Eddie Stern visits LA for puja, practice, meditation, pranayama and lectures

Hosted by Los Angeles Yoga Club & Jivamukti Yoga LA

Friday Intro Lecture and Ganesh Puja

7pm - 9pm

The lovable, elephant-headed Ganesha is the personification of strength while facing obstacles and challenges. In this participatory ritual we will be invoking the presence of Ganesh who dwells within us as the capacity to be firm in the face of challenge, and to help us embody receptivity and care. It is taught in Hinduism that all of the deities exist within us as our inner nature of light and love, and outwardly are the external expressions of our heart. When we chant mantras and perform rituals we are not praying outside of ourselves to a deity, but are invoking the inner deity to awaken within us, and for that light to bless us and pervade our intellect, mind, thoughts, emotions, sense organs and actions. Please dress in clean, festive clothes, and bring an offering of flowers, fruits, nuts, or vegan cooked goods.

*The Real Nature of Things in Yoga Sutras (Saturday and Sunday lectures)

The lectures on Saturday and Sunday will investigate the “real nature of things” as outlined in the Yoga Sutras. We’ll look into the Vibhuti chapter, or the chapter on attainments, which describe the inherent power of time, the present moment, birth, the body, as well as friendship and the nervous system. In order to understand the context for the inherent power of things, we’ll also discuss the philosophy of Sankhya, as a viewpoint on reality the helps us understand and experience the distinction between the observer, that is, us, and the things that we observe (which also might be us). The Vibhuti pada is often looked down upon as the chapter on super-powers, but it is so much more than that. It is the chapter where the harnessing of the infinite power of the mind is taught. The lectures will include chanting, discussion, and Q&A.

"Tranquility that is experienced by the mind through

reverential faith sustains a yogin like a loving mother.

This kind of faith gives a seeker after discriminative

knowledge energy, which brings him sustained

memory, which makes the mind undisturbed and

collected and conducive to concentration. In such a

mind dawns the light of discriminative knowledge, by

which the yogin understands the real nature of things.
