A SAFE SPACE FOR DOULAS TO DEEPEN THEIR SKILLS IN SUPPORTING MOTHERS IMPACTED BY TRAUMA

GUIDED BY: KENYA FAIRLEY, MSED, CD(DONA), CD(CHB)

Pregnancy and childbirth can be transformative experiences for so many women. For some, it can also be frightening and overwhelming, triggering a current or past history of trauma or abuse. In the past two years we have seen the awareness of the MeToo movement take the world by storm. There is now public consciousness around sexual violence and how that shows up in various forms in our lives. Pregnant survivors of domestic violence or sexual abuse can benefit greatly from trauma-informed birth support that improves their childbirth experience and long-term health outcomes, increases their healing and resiliency, and promotes bonding with their newborns.

Join us to explore the impact of trauma and violence on pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting during postpartum recovery.

This in-depth workshop will offer realistic strategies to engage pregnant survivors in meaningful, trauma-informed ways. Educating birth workers (e.g., doulas, childbirth educators, lactation consultants, midwives) about the dynamics of intimate partner violence and related health impacts can lead to enhanced safety and support for pregnant survivors and their children. We will also dive into self-care techniques and tools for birth workers providing this level of support.

Kenya’s book, With Harp & Sword: A Doula’s Guide to Providing Trauma-Informed Birth Support, will be included with each ticket purchase. Virtual attendees will receive the E-book.

What You Can Expect to Learn:

- Indicators of abuse and how to recognize signs of trauma in the clients you serve

- Understand the tactics of abuse, including those specific to women during the childbearing years

- Research on the impact of trauma, domestic violence, and sexual assault on pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum healing

- Trauma-informed strategies to engage their clients who may be triggered during pregnancy or childbirth

- Self-care strategies to manage their own healing, resilience, empathy, and caregiving

After attending this session, doulas have reported an increase in overall confidence and empathy in their role and are more knowledgeable about the signs of abuse, trauma, and survival.
